Golf Day 2023
It was warm and the
sense of anticipation palpable. Aidan Selby was tucked away on the club’s
broadband as the rest of us got stuck into coffee and bacon sandwiches and the
keen ones hit balls on the range. In a break with tradition from previous years,
despite heavy traffic congestion and a police hunt for an escaped convict, the
starting sheet didn’t suffer from alterations thanks to latecomers and we got
off on time. The results:
Nearest the pin:
David Garland’s
beautiful tee shot to the par 3 12th hole was eclipsed by Freddie
Broster-Turley’s nine iron to three feet.
Longest Drive:
Tom Wood felt he was in
with a chance of bagging the prize when he hit a straight one down the 18th but
looking back down the fairway he was disappointed to see the ball of Tom
Salvesen rolling a good ten yards past him. About 270 yards we reckoned.
The Competition:
It was an exceptional
effort from Aidan Selby to finish his meeting on time and go out with the final
group to get 39 points with a 9 handicap. But new man Freddy Broster-Turley
pipped him with 39 points an astonishing 25 of which were on the back 9 (and he
didn’t score on the 18th).
The standard was high
and the wooden spoon sleeve of balls went to injured man Evan Samuel (Handicap
9) with a thoroughly respectable 27 points.
The Strollers treated
everyone to much needed rehydration and Hersham fed us with burgers and chips
as the modest prizes were distributed and we relaxed on the terrace with the
pleasantly tired feeling that we had earned our beer. Thanks to Hersham who
looked after us well.
